Trelawny

Trelawny is a parish on the north coast of Jamaica, with Montego Bay to its west and Ocho Rios to its east. In addition to being home to one of the largest groups of Maroons in Jamaica (Africans and African descendants who escaped slavery to live in the mountains and who successfully fought off the British), Trelawny is also known for Falmouth, where many cruise ships dock, and for Duncans, where you will find one of our favourite places on the island.

Recommended Stays

Silver Sands is one of our very favourite places to stay, and is also perfect if you’re looking for a longer-term stay and a place that can feel like a home. It’s a large, well-established, gated community that is safe and comfortable, with a wide assortment of accommodations, most Jamaican-owned, ranging from 1-bedroom cottages to sprawling villas. The beach is expansive, clean and beautiful and the community is very well-maintained. When you tire of the beach, most homes also come with a pool. And importantly, customer service from end to end is always excellent.

Recommended Activities

If you stay at Silver Sands, each home comes with the services of a housekeeper and chef. You have the option of either buying groceries yourself on your way from the airport or having the housekeeper buy groceries based on a list your provide. You can also allow the chef to prepare a meal for you of their choosing – take this option! The chefs are very talented, and they know best what their signature dish is. Don’t be afraid to try some Jamaican food prepared with passion and skill by an expert, even if it’s wildly different from what you’re used to.

Our Trelawny Bucket List

The Luminous Lagoon aka Glistening Waters is apparently such a site to see that it’s even been featured prominently in the recent Disney movie Migration. The waters there are filled with “dinoflagellates”, which are micro-organisms that glisten and illuminate at night when the waters are disturbed (e.g. when you are swimming). There are evening tours on a daily basis, so we can’t wait to try it out.
