When you travel to Jamaica, where tourism is one of the major industries, you are undoubtedly contributing to the economy. This is especially true if you head off-resort and support local taxi drivers, food vendors, restaurants, and shops. But you may also wonder what more you can do to support the people of the country, many of whom work to serve you for long hours in the tourist industry for low wages. So here are a few charities to consider supporting, so that you can leave a net positive impact on the country.
Food for the Poor Jamaica is the largest charitable organization in Jamaica, and we mentioned them already in our post on Hurricane Melissa. They work broadly, including in the sectors of healthcare, housing, sanitation, education and micro-enterprise. We have seen them in action in the health space and they really do so much to support people who need help the most. You can make donations but you can also volunteer your time – a much-needed activity as hurricane relief is ongoing.
We are strong believers that education can be a key driver of lifting people out of poverty. As such, we are regular donors to The University of the West Indies Development & Endowment Fund. There are so many talented students who are at risk every year of having to leave school because of not having the funds for tuition, books and living expenses. Donations can be made towards a specific project or scholarship, or you could even start your own!
Our beautiful island is highly vulnerable to the pending climate disaster, and thus we definitely encourage you to check out Jamaica Environment Trust. Their environmental work includes important initiatives such as saving animal species who are under threat, advocating for clean air and water, and regular clean-up days. They have been around now for over 30 years and continue to be a tireless voice on the environment. Consider donating or volunteering, and regardless, do your part while you are on the island to not contribute to plastic waste and littering.
Many hotels operate their own charitable organizations, such as Goldeneye, Tryall, and Half Moon to name just a few. Many of these foundations will focus on environmental sustainability, school adoption of nearby schools, and support for their employees. Check with your hotel about if they have opportunities to donate, and/or if there are items you can pack that would be useful. But PLEASE check first what would be useful and appropriate, and don’t view this as an opportunity to get rid of your junk!
So when you plan your trip, don’t only think of what your Jamaican vacation will do for you, but also give some thought as to what you can do for Jamaica!
