Weddings in Jamaica

One of the most common reasons for travel to Jamaica, or at least it feels that way, is for destination weddings. And it only makes sense; for couples interested in a beach or tropical wedding, Jamaica really is the ideal spot due to the wide variety of options. Many of the all-inclusives are extremely well-oiled machines when it comes to destination weddings and can take 90% of the work out of your hands, allowing you to just focus on the fun. We got married in Jamaica but we actually chose not to go the all-inclusive route, wanting a more hands-on and personal approach, and can attest to there being tons of options in that regard as well. There are so many amazing locations to choose from for this type of wedding, like Bellefield Great House, Rose Hall, Hope Gardens, Good Hope Estate, the University of the West Indies Chapel, and Prospect Estate, as well as the various hotels that we’ve mentioned throughout the site. Now, some of these locations are former plantations – in other words, the home to previous atrocities – so bear that in mind (as we said on our Travel Tips page, please don’t go to Jamaica to live out slave-owner fantasies!) But you can also view it as reclamation – these are also beautiful locations where Jamaican vendors and service providers can directly benefit.

For example, Jamaica has many very skilled wedding photographers, like Richard Dean, Dwayne Watkins, and Tiffany Lue-Yen. When it comes to wedding decor, PussBackFoot does some stunning work. (If you”re wondering about the name, “dress to puss back foot” is a Jamaican expression meaning dress to impress). Selena Wong made our stunning cake (see our photos below) but we’re not sure if she’s still in the wedding cake business. Regardless, Jamaican tradition calls for rum-soaked black cake as your wedding cake – remember to keep the first tier to eat on your first anniversary.
