Jamaica’s Mineral Baths

The wellness industry has become so big in recent years, and for those of you who are into that, Jamaica’s got you! The country has several famed mineral baths i.e. bodies of water that naturally contain dissolved minerals, often from hot springs or other underground sources. Mineral baths are believed to have therapeutic properties, and many swear by their healing effects.

We are not ready yet to add this to our Kingston bucket list but we’re definitely intrigued by one of Jamaica’s national monuments, the Rockfort Mineral Bath, located near the Kingston airport. The story is that a mineral spring was discovered in 1907 following the infamous earthquake that year, and that the water from the spring has a myriad of health benefits. The water from the mineral spring is actually piped into a swimming pool that visitors can relax in for up to 45 minutes at a time. It has just recently re-opened after being closed for many years so we are looking forward to hearing some reviews.

There are other famous mineral baths as well on the island, such as Bath Fountain in St. Thomas and Milk River in Clarendon, and both sites have hotels nearby where visitors can stay. Milk River was apparently discovered by an enslaved man whose wounds healed after bathing there, or at least so legend says. For Bath, which is also near the almost 300-year-old Bath Botanical Gardens, be warned that many locals apparently are there hustling, with some offering amazing guide experiences and some not…

But regardless, it seems like Jamaica has several mineral baths that are intriguing and worth trying out. At best, perhaps a reprieve from aches and pains, and even if the health benefits aren’t true, should still be an enjoyable experience!
